Tune-y Tuesday: Songs to wake up early and enjoy your coffee with

by Marco Ovies

Back when I used to work as a barista at a popular coffee place I used to have to open the store at 4 a.m. I’m not going to name any names but you could say that this coffee shop was a real star at making bucks (was that too obvious?). I may have dreaded having to wake up that early in the morning, probably one of my favourite parts of working that early is I would get to go on my break just as the sun was starting to rise. I would grab a warm cup of coffee, put in some headphones, and sit outside on the patio enjoying half an hour of the crisp morning air.

Fortunately, I don’t have to wake up that early anymore, but I do miss watching the sunrise every morning. I would encourage everyone reading this to at least try and wake up early once. And for when you do give it a try, here are some songs from my early morning playlist that I think you might enjoy.

“Paper News” by Ritt Momney

“Paper News” is the perfect song to start off our morning coffee playlist. It starts out soft with airy vocals, bright piano, and perfect harmonies as a backing track. But once you hit the one-minute mark, the song starts to pick up slightly. Strong chords accompany a driving electric guitar that strangely does not sound out of place in this sombre song. Ritt Momney does an excellent job of incorporating unique instruments to make this gentle ballad.

“Golden Days” by Whitney

Whitney has an incredible falsetto that is reminiscent of the Bee Gee’s. Additionally, the track is perfectly named for a sunrise. “Golden Days” is the ideal song to start your morning off with and I guarantee you’ll find it making its way to your other playlists

“My Kind of Woman” by Mac DeMarco

There is something so unique about the mix of electric guitar and synth that Mac DeMarco uses in this song that scratches an itch in the back of my mind. Musically, Mac DeMarco perfectly captures a sense of sadness and longing despite the rather happy lyrics. Additionally, lyrics like “I feel so tired” will definitely sound a lot more relatable when you’re up at 4am.

Anytime” by broox

This is the kind of song that I would love to stumble into a local coffee shop and hear being performed live. broox has created this nostalgic tune that is beautiful in it’s simplicity. 4am is not the time of day to be listening to anything overly complex. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this old-timey tune.

“Only in My Dreams” by The Marías

You may think you’re still dreaming because you woke up so early and that caffeine hasn’t hit yet, but I promise that you are not. The Marías do a wonderful job at incorporating dreamy melodies and synths to this gentle track. This is the perfect song to end your playlist with as you inevitably climb back into bed and go back to sleep.
