Tune-y Tuesday: Songs for seizing the day

by Carter Hemion

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had dreams bigger than I can grasp. I’m always chasing after the next big thing, whether it’s a job opportunity, a chance for a new hobby, a blossoming relationship, or some niche side project. Having a long agenda can be great, but sometimes I struggle getting motivated to go after everything on my list, and sometimes I just need a little encouragement that I’m going in the right direction; that’s where this upbeat playlist comes in.

When I could use a pick-me-up on my way to start something important, I just pop in my earbuds, turn up the music, and let the beats take me where I need to go. These are some of my favourite motivational songs, and I hope they can help you seize the day too.

Head In The Clouds” by BabyJake

BabyJake gives us a mellow start to this playlist, with laid-back melodic guitar lines and a relaxed percussion section to get settled in. Let it lull you into writing that to-do list and grabbing your shoes as you dream up what you want your day to look like.

The Spins” by Mac Miller

Okay, “The Spins” has to be the ultimate feel-good song. The infectious beat behind nostalgic vocals will have you bobbing your head along as you work. Mac Miller’s distinctive voice alongside the bubbly synth background sampled from “Half Mast” is always enough to make me want to dance.

Seize the Power” by YONAKA

YONAKA’s rock anthem is the perfect push to get going. This song makes me want to put all my concentration on something big. Indie rock with an electronic touch, the song reminds me that “I got power,” and so do you.

Feeling Good” by Nina Simone

Nina Simone has one of the most powerful voices in soul and commands attention. When her isolated vocals are joined by a jazzy, orchestral background, you can be certain that you are exactly where you need to be. Feel good about where you are today and take in the world with her.

Hustler” by Zayde Wølf

For a strong finish, give “Hustler” a listen, and take it all in. The dark, haunting song exudes confidence, and it will be more than enough to send you off for the rest of the day. With strong vocals and hard beats, all that’s left for you to do is take the power already in your hands.
